Addictions: Counselling Theory and Practice

This professional development workshop will provide an overview of the bio-psycho-social model of addiction and the addicted brain, and will provide participants with tools for assessing and treating clients based on best practices in the field. We will cover relapse prevention tools, making appropriate referrals, and working with clients at various stages of readiness for change.

Therapeutic Enactment
Group Intervention for Traumatized Clients

2½ Day Intensive Training Weekend  ·  January 10–12, 2014

The goal of this advanced workshop is to teach counselling professionals the model of Therapeutic Enactment for working with traumatized clients in a group context with the primary focus on veteran and refugee populations. This is an introductory (Level I ) TE workshop which will present the model through teaching with video, demonstrations, and experience based learning sessions for the participants. Participants learn how to plan, design, and lead this approach and how to integrate it into their current and ongoing counselling practice.

Registrants must have experience or graduate level training in providing psychological therapy. Knowledge and experience in group therapy and experience working with clients who have been traumatized is an important asset. Successful applicants will be expected to complete two readings in advance of the workshop.

Creativity and Healing: Art as Therapy in Trauma Recovery

Thursday, February 16, 2012, 1–4 pm. Space is limited.

Trauma recovery is a complex process. The symbolic or visual representations of experience, emotion and memory can often be accessed long before these aspects of experience are verbalized. Designed for counsellors and therapists who work with traumatized clients, this workshop will guide participants in the effective use of art therapy to help maximize a clients’ capacity for managing issues of stabilization and trauma processing (i.e. building a therapeutic relationship, developing affect tolerance and regulation, and accessing hidden aspects of the self and experience).

Topics will include:

  • Working with expressive therapies within the 3 Phases of trauma treatment
  • Affect regulation (fear, anger, hopelessness, shame, joy/playfulness) & expanding the Window of Tolerance
  • Dissociation
  • Transference/Countertransference
  • Working with the image (how to process)
  • Stuck Points
  • Integration with other treatment techniques and approaches
  • Self-care for therapist/counsellor

Tally Tripp, MA, MSW, LICSW, ATR-BC is the Director of the George Washington University Art Therapy Center with over 25 years of both clinical and private practice experience. Her passion for art therapy and the potential it offers for posttraumatic healing and growth is evident in her dynamic, engaging and hands-on trainings and presentations. A frequent presenter at national and international conferences, Tally weaves together the clinical wisdom of a seasoned practitioner with client and therapist art work to clearly demonstrate all the healing and regenerative power of art therapy. In addition to her formal training, Tally has advanced, specialized training in working with traumatized individuals through the International Society for the Study of Trauma & Dissociation (ISSTD). Advanced Experiential Workshop

Integrative Sand Tray Workshop

February 11th, 2011 or March 18th, 2011, 9 am to 1 pm

Sand tray therapy is a powerful approach that has the potential to complement a range of therapeutic approaches and counselling models. In this workshop, Bart Begalka, M.Ed provides participants with the applied skills gleaned from his years of experience in work with traumatized children and adults. Participants will learn integrative sand tray techniques that can be applied immediately and effectively with a range of presenting concerns for clients of all ages, including but not limited to: Developmental trauma, separation and divorce, attachment difficulties, parent-child conflict, persistent nightmares.

Assessment and Treatment of Traumatized Children and Adolescents with Complex Trauma and Dissociative Symptoms

The workshop takes place over four Fridays: April 8th, April 29th, May 27th and June 17th, 2011. 9:30 am to 4:30 pm

The International Society for the Study of Trauma & Dissociation (ISSTD) offers this unique workshop that includes key research, assessments and interventions for the treatment of traumatized children and adolescents.
