Contributing to the personal growth of others is the heartbeat and the sweet spot that I look for in my relationships. That is where I find meaning, significance and energy. I believe that being compassionately present with others has real value in itself. I have a deep belief in our capacity to find real life resolutions when we have access to understanding, support and respect. Complementing that, I love helping by applying knowledge in a personal and meaningful way that helps us face and grow through life’s hurts and challenges.
It has brought great meaning to my life to work with people in the way that I do; I am honoured to walk with others through both their pain and their triumphs. I am currently a doctoral student at the University of British Columbia and am a registered clinical counsellor with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). I am also an active member of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD) and remain involved in various research projects and continuing education in order to stay current and offer a variety of treatment options to best meet the needs of my clients.
Painful life experiences may cause us to lose connection with ourselves and with those we are in relationship with, but change is possible. Nothing gives me greater joy than journeying with others toward becoming unstuck and experiencing growth, freedom, healing and self-acceptance.
Counselling can be a life changing process, one that some of us put off for many years. Whether counselling is something that has been on your mind for a while, or it is a crisis situation that brings you in, I look forward to meeting you and walking with you on your journey.
Sometimes on life’s journey, we may be uncertain where we’re heading. Or be carrying the weight of where we’ve been. Sometimes we just need a companion to walk with us along the way and witness our journey. It is my passion and privilege to be able and willing to walk the road with others in the pursuit of a better, healthier future. For the past 20 years, I have developed skills and experiences that allow me to accompany you on life’s journey. I have a caring, compassionate and non-judgmental approach to counselling and believe that everyone has the strength within themselves to heal.
Many of us have endured difficulty and struggle at some point throughout our lives that has impacted our abilities to connect with others, foster change within ourselves and attain our personal goals. Through the counselling relationship, I have been privileged to observe and experience the resiliency and strength of the human spirit as I journey with clients to a place of healing, growth and transformation.
In my practice, I strongly believe in the power of relationship to heal and to promote personal growth. The uniqueness of each life can feel particularity isolating during times of difficulty, and it is often during these times that a drive to isolate parts of the self that are tough to acknowledge emerges. This can leave us feeling stuck, anxious, angry, and upset. At times these feelings make it hard to find connection with those in our lives, yet it is also during the most challenging times when connection to others is most valuable. It is my passion and privilege to sit with and support clients during these most difficult times.
It is often when the pain of life is deepest that we feel most alone, and it can be hard to reach out for help or make people understand our experience. For as long as I can remember, I have felt drawn to those who are in a time of struggle. The opportunity to come alongside someone as they journey, to know their unique experience, to be a part of their story and offer my whole-hearted acceptance and my belief in their capacity to heal and grow – this is the thing that gives me the greatest fulfillment. Being known and seen in the warmth of relationship gives us much of what we need to overcome the trauma and pain of life and regain strength and meaning. This is what I seek to offer you when you come through my door.
Part of the joy of being a counsellor is having the opportunity to accompany people in their journeys of self-discovery. I have great admiration for the courage it takes to turn inward during times of struggle – for while we may not have control over the things that happen to us in life, I believe there is a lot we can do about how we respond to these events.Read Ria’s Full Bio →
